“Whose soul is greater than the ocean…”
(Viola in Twelfth Night, William Shakespeare)
I have never swum
in the Pacific Ocean
and yet I stood on the sand shore
and waves came to me
to my bare feet
I had a hat on my head
and they kept on coming
restlessly against my bare feet
pulling me inside my wish
to swim, even for a moment,
in its dark silence
in its ceaseless distance in the dream of its depth.
No, I have never swum
in the Pacific Ocean.
