Biography

Mak Dizdar, (Stolac, Bosnia and Herzegovina, 17 October 1917 – 14 July 1971), with his collection Stone Sleeper (1966) became one of the most remarkable poets in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Exercising empathy with the language and the world of the bogomils’ tombstones and bringing back to life the distant past of his nation and his country from the tombstone inscriptions, he gave poetry records from his own views on the people and history, creating in the same time a new poetic language as an expected reflection of the Bosnian and Herzegovinian reality. Works: Vidopole Night, 1936, Woman Swimmer, 1954; Cruelties of Circle, 1960 and others.
