Beyond coral reefs
a deserted sea where a light
breeze and a bird in the sky
announce the longed-for land
of scuba diving harmony.
It is where Vietnamese bamboo rafts
cross the ocean in search of bread
and when they see a butterfly
they remember for ever
each of its pores
breathing in spouting colours
because that means the land is near
and they are not going to drown
or die of thirst.
There beyond the seabed
of petrified lava
lies Australia.
