Birds at the airport
present a serious danger.
A single bird,
if it gets into the engine
of a jet plane
during take-off,
can kill
120 people.
Birds are,
to put it mildly,
undesirable at airports.
Trees too are undesirable,
for they can appear
before a taxiing plane
and tripping it
reduce it to ashes.
Undesirable also
are all other kinds of roughness
in the terrain,
such as rills, boulders,
grassy banks,
wuthering heights,
and fairyland springs.
Don’t you feel how
our wish to fly
takes us away from everything
we have so far been
and leaves us all alone
face to face
with the vast emptiness
of the sky?
