Biography

Toma Grigorie was born on 5 May 1940, in the village Golenţi, the town of Calafat, district Dolj. He graduated from University in 1966, and defended his PhD thesis in 1983 at the University of Bucharest. He taught in a high school between 1963-1974, then he taught at the University of Craiova, the Faculty of Letters, between 1974-2005. He worked as Associate Professor at the Romance Languages Institute “Adam Mickiewicz”, Poznań, Poland, between 1996-1998. He was scientific secretary of Romanian Language and culture and civilization courses at the University of Craiova.He participated in the summer courses at Ohrid, Macedonia (1978,1983). He spoke there twice on the relationship between Macedonian and Romanian literatures. He was invited to several International Poetry Festivals: Poznań, Poland (1996, 2001), Halkida, Greece (2002). He was awarded four prizes by the Union of Romanian Writers. He was also awarded a number of Diplomas. 

He supported the Department of Macedonian Language at the University of Craiova.

He has published in a number of magazines: Ramuri, Cultura, România literară, Luceafărul, Luceafărul de dimineaţă, Viaţa românească,  Mozaicul, Familia, Vatra, Steaua, Convorbiri literare, Delo (former Yugoslavia), Literacka Polska (Warsaw)  Almanahul Festivalului Internaţional de poezie, Poznań, Poland , Knijevno jitie (Macedonia)  ş.a. 

His poems have been published in Romanian, German and English anthologies. They have been translated into Macedonian, English, French, German, Greek, Polish, Bulgarian.  So far he has published 14 books of poetry, 5 books of literary criticism and essays, a book consisting of 5 theatre plays, translations from contemporary world poetry. Two of his plays have been staged in Craiova, at the theatre “Marin Sorescu” Craiova.
